Tomorrow is theirs

A fascinating BOAC (British government airline) advertisement film from the fifties.

Tomorrow was not theirs, but that of plastics, the jet engine and the transistor, which made almost all of these jobs obsolete.

The British mindset of bringing luxurious services just to the few members of the elite shows very well too. With such staggering amounts of staff per passenger, flying could never have been done by many.

Of course, human spaceflight hasn’t really been able to progress from the mindset depicted here. Karel Bossart designed the original Atlas in the forties, though that design heritage only flies in the Centaur anymore, and perhaps to some extent gets tribute from the Falcon 1 and 9.
