Saimaa Ringed Seal

After the ice age, the land started rising and some ringed seals (norppa in Finnish) got stuck into the area that was cut off from the sea and is nowadays called the Saimaa lake system – the largest lake in Finland. They are a species, Saimaa Ringed Seal or Saimaannorppa – and now they are in danger of extinction, since leisure fishers put nets and the cubs die in them. SLL is organizing a demonstration in Helsinki, starting saturday at two o clock in Kamppi to increase awareness and for legislation banning nets in early summer in certain area. This is a very quick post and I now have to run.
